AN ASSESMENT OF EXTENT OF DEPRESSION IN OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Obsessions and compulsions are slowly developing changes in the personality of an individual whereas low mood, irritability, sleep pattern with increase heart rate and palpitations are very frequently reported which is mostly in the form of an unnecessary fear or worry. AIM & OBJECTIVES: This study is done to assess the extent of depression in individuals presenting in the outpatient department of psychiatry at a tertiary care center mainly for the chief complaints of obsession and compulsions. MATERIAL AND METHOD USED: The present study was done in a cross-sectional design with purposing sampling. SAMPLE SIZE: 120 number of OCD patients were evaluated, chosen and selected as subjects for this study purpose. METHOD (SCALES APPLIED): All 120 patients were assessed on Yale brown obsessive compulsive questionnaire scale (Y-BOCS) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D). Appropriate method of statistics applied and all variables in this study had been analyzed using Mean plus Standard Deviation. RESULTS: shows that a broad range of symptoms are co morbidly reported where patients of OCD here presented with symptoms of frustration with mild to severe grade of depression on having symptoms of obsession and compulsion persistently from a longer duration of time period and the most important thing that is also done is that the patients with OCD were assessed for Depression here at an interval of time period that includes assessment in the beginning, mid and end of the study. CONCLUSION: It is very essential to clearly visualize the symptoms in order to prevent misdiagnosing a case between OCD, Anxiety and Depression. In our study mild, moderate and severe grade of Depressive episode is reported which itself also get slowly improved in those who had regularly taken the complete course of treatment for their primary complaints of obsessions and compulsions.
